Edwards Joins Smith At The NCAA Championship

DENTON, Texas (6/3/08) North Texas high jumper Toby Edwards will be joining Ciara Smith at the 2008 NCAA Track and Field Championship next week as he received an at-large bid today. Edwards earned his way to the championship by virtue of his 7’ ” jump on April 24 and by finishing in the top 10 at the regional meet this past weekend.

Smith was an automatic qualifier in the 400-meter dash with her fifth place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional.


Edwards, the school record holder in the high jump, is the first high jumper in school history to make the NCAA Championship. Smith and Edwards advancing marks only the second time in school history that the Mean Green has had two athletes in separate events at the NCAA Championship. In 1999 the Mean Green’s 4x100 relay team competed at the championship. 


In 1983 North Texas had three athletes and the men’s 4x400 relay team compete at the championship.


Men’s qualifying in the high jump is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11 with the finals at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 13.


Women’s 400 meter qualifying is Wednesday, June 11 at 6:30 p.m. The semifinals are on Friday, June 13 at 8:15 p.m. with the finals taking place on Saturday, June 14 at 3:05 p.m.

The 2008 NCAA Track and Field Championship is from June 11-14 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
