DENTON, Tex. (6/3/08) Following its successful weekend at the Midwest Regional the North Texas track and field team had 15 athletes named to the all-region team by the U.S. Track & Field Coaches Association. Even more impressive is feat accomplished by the North Texas relays teams.
The Mean Green was one of only four teams in the nation that had each of its men and women’s 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams finish in the top eight and earn all-region honors. Only North Texas, Baylor, South Carolina, and Florida had all four relay teams qualify for the finals in their respective regions.
The Mean Green had a total of 19 awards as Alysha Adams, Ciara Smith, Kelvin Wright and Ryan Varner were two-time recipients.
“The mindset of our kids going into this meet was to make an impact, and not be satisfied with just being a participant,” said head coach Rick Watkins. “I am very proud of how they competed against some of the best competition in the country. They really responded to our challenge of raising their performance to a higher level beyond the conference meet”.
The 15 athletes to receive all-region honors are the most in school history for North Texas and were tops in the Sun Belt Conference. Along with the relay teams, Smith earned all-region in the 400 meters and qualified for the 2008 NCAA Championship with a school record time of 53.41. Adams earned all-region in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.98. Freshman Jermaine Jamison finished seventh to earn all-region in the high jump.
