Day 1: NT Track Qualifies For Finals In Two Events At NCAA Regionals
NORMAN, Oklahoma (5/30/09) The University of North Texas track and field team will be sending at least two more athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the fifth consecutive season.
Jordan Wehr (pole vault) and the men’s 4X100 relay team earned automatic berths on Saturday at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships.
“To keep this string alive of consecutive appearances was one of our goals,” North Texas head coach Rick Watkins said. “These kids elevated their expectations coming into this weekend. To come here and to compete against the best country says a lot about our team.”
Wehr, a sophomore out of Austin, Texas finished fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 16-11.00. This feat came weeks after setting the school record at the Sun Belt Conference Championships.
“Coming into this meet we thought Jordan’s mark was probably good enough to advance through but that didn’t slow him down,” Watkins said. “He has really come on strong towards the end of the season and he’s starting to figure things out.”
Joining Wehr will be the quarter of Keyth Talley, Ryan Varner, Byron Washington and C.J. Fowler. The men’s 4X100 earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships with a second place finish of 39.83, the best of the season.
Alysha Adams (100m hurdles) and Brock Stickler (discus) were the other two competitors on Saturday. Adams just barely missed earning a berth to Fayetteville, Arkansas with a sixth place finish of 13.70. Stickler placed 10th in the discus with a throw of 175-00 and although he didn’t earn a trip to the NCAA Championships, he might still have an outside shot with his previous marks.
The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will take place June 10-13. North Texas might still have other athletes to join Wehr and company and should find out on Tuesday if their marks from the regular season are good enough.
