LINCOLN, Neb. (5/29/08) - The University of North Texas track and field team will head north to Lincoln, Neb. to compete at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships on Friday and Saturday, May 30-31 at Ed Weir Stadium.

A total of 24 Mean Green athletes will compete in 15 different events; the second-most in school history. The 24 athletes are the most North Texas has ever taken to a regional meet. North Texas took 23 athletes in 2003; the first year the NCAA Regionals were ever held.

“I feel really confident that we’ve got some athletes who are going to make some noise at the regional meet,” said head coach Rick Watkins. “We should be able to score and compete for the top spot in several events.”

For the first time since 2005, the North Texas track team qualified all four relay teams for the NCAA Midwest Regionals. The men’s quartet of Darnell Greig, Ryan Varner, Montrel Pyron and Kelvin Wright are currently ranked 12th in the region in the 4x400 relay. North Texas finished a school-best fifth in the 4X400 relay at the 2005 NCAA Midwest Regionals.

The Mean Green women will also be very well represented in Lincoln. North Texas hurdlers Lauren Wiggins and Alysha Adams both head into Lincoln looking to be the first North Texas athlete to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 100-meter hurdles. The Mean Green has never had two athletes qualify for the NCAA Championships in the same event. Wiggins currently has the eighth fastest time in the region, while Adams sits at 10th.

Brandi Stanfield is making her third consecutive outdoor regional appearance in the triple jump. Stanfield, a junior from Austin, finished fourth in the triple jump two weeks ago at the SBC Championships.

The hammer throw will kick off the NCAA Midwest Championships Friday at 1 p.m. with the running prelims to begin at 1:30 p.m. The two-day regional championships can also be seen via FREE WEBSTREAM.
