DENTON, Texas (5/26/09) The University of North Texas track and field team will travel back to Norman, Oklahoma to take part at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships on Friday and Saturday, May 29-30 at John Jacobs Field.
A total of 15 North Texas athletes will compete in 15 different events, tying the same amount they competed in last season. The Mean Green is vying to send an athlete to the NCAA Championships for the fifth season in a row.
“Our goal this weekend is pretty simple, to advance as many as possible to the NCAA Championships,” North Texas head coach Rick Watkins said. “This will be the toughest, most intense competition of the year. We have to make sure our intensity level is at its highest and that we have a sense of urgency. This weekend will end the season for a lot of people across the country that are not mentally prepared. We will be prepared from a mental standpoint.”
Keyth Talley, the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, will participate in both the 200-meter dash and the 4x100 relay team. Joining Talley in the relay will be C.J. Fowler, Ryan Varner and Byron Washington.
In the field events high jumper Jermaine Jamison, who has the number one spot in the conference, will aim to advance to the NCAA Championships. Senior Brock Stickler (discus) and Jordan Wehr (pole vault) will compete on Saturday. Wehr enters this weekend with the fourth best height in the region.
On the women’s side Brittani Simmons will have a busy weekend, competing in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and the 4x400 relay. Simmons will team up with Shayla Hart, Chrystal Mitchell and Ciara Smith in the relay.
Smith will be looking for a repeat performance from last season when she finished fifth at regionals in the 400-meter dash and earned a trip to the NCAA Championships.
The Mean Green will be without the services of senior Lauren Wiggins, who was a late medical scratch.
Senior thrower Alana Tyler will kick-start this weekend’s competition in the hammer throw at 11 a.m. on Friday. For the most updated results click here for live stats. Be sure to check back www.meangreensports.com at day’s end for full results.
