DENTON, Tex.- North Texas track and field head coach Rick Watkins has been named the South Central Region Coach of the Year by the United States Track Coaches Association. Watkins led the Mean Green to it's second Sun Belt Conference track and field championship in three years this season. Watkins was also named the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons.
Watkins also oversaw the rise of the women's track and field program this year. The Lady Eagles finished in third place at the Outdoor Championship, their best finish since 1987, and scored the most points in school history. Watkins is only the fourth North Texas track and field coach to have won multiple conference championships.
Watkins, one of only nine coaches selected, will now be eligible for the USTCA National Coach of the Year, which will be voted on at the conclusion of next week's NCAA Championship at LSU in Baton Rouge, LA.
