DENTON, Texas - Twelve Mean Green track & field qualifiers will begin action at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon on Thursday afternoon in hopes of advancing to the NCAA Championships.
North Texas, which originally declared 11 athletes for competition, added senior Patrick Strong to the docket on Tuesday afternoon when he became the 48th competitor for the 10,000 meter run which will be held at 7:50 p.m. PT on Thursday.
Thursday's action will begin at 3:45 p.m. for the Mean Green when senior Jordan Wehr takes to the pole vault pit. Wehr comes in ranked 30th overall in the event and will need to finish inside the top-12 to advance to the NCAA Championships.
Steven White becomes the first one to step on the track when he competes in the 400-hurdles at 3:55 p.m. White was a member of the USA Junior World Championship in 2010 as a freshman after finish second at the USA Junior Championships.
The women's 100-meter dash will begin at 5:10 p.m. and will feature North Texas' Alysha Adams and Brittany Blaylock. Blaylock comes into the event at No. 31 on the descending order list, while Adams sits 43rd.
An hour later, senior Darnell Greig will hit the track for the 400-meter dash. Greig, who will also be competing as a member of the men's 4x400-meter relay, enters completion with the 36th fastest time.
All three sprint events that North Texas will be competing in are first round races. To advance to Friday's quarterfinals, the athletes must either be among the top three finishers in their respective heats or have one of the next six fastest times.
