DENTON – The North Texas track and field teams will be competing for championships starting Friday, May 11, at the 2018 C-USA outdoor championships hosted by Rice at the Wendel D. Ley Track in Houston.

The Mean Green will open the outdoor championships with the women’s hammer throw competition on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Freshmen Ashlynn Smart, Haley Walker and sophomore Kristyn Archuleta will compete for the Mean Green.

Senior Mike Lowe and sophomore Florian Lussy will run in the 10000-meter event on Friday, May 11, at 8 p.m. Lowe’s school record time of 29:39.62 set at the Mt. SAC Relays is ranked second in the C-USA.

Lussy will also take part in the 5000-meter run on Sunday at 8:05 p.m. and is second with a time of 14:18.60. Lowe sits fourth with a time of 14:25.49.

On the women’s side, senior Christina Moralez ranks third in 5000m after running a time of 16:58.33 at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 19. Sophomore Jennifer White holds the second fastest time in C-USA in the 3000-meter steeplechase at 11:30.67 set at Texas State’s Bobcat Classic on April 28.

Sophomore Bailey Ashmore has a chance to build off her indoor success after placing third in pole vault. Ashmore vaulted a school record 4.05 meters at Texas State’s Bobcat Classic on April 27. Classmate Breanna Eckels is a favorite to finish top-three in long jump after her career-best mark of 6.28 meters was set at the Beach Invitational on April 20.

In men’s discus, sophomore Karl Sralla holds the third-best mark in C-USA with a throw of 53.34 meters set back at the first outdoor meet of the season on March 16.

The women’s 4x100-meter relay team ran a season-best time of 45.29 at the Beach Invitational on April 20 and enter this weekend with the second fastest time as freshman Taylor Blackshire, junior Bria Williams, Eckels and freshman Aneesa Scott hope to bring home the title.

North Texas hasn’t had more than two combined individual winners in four seasons competing in Conference USA. The Mean Green could match that in one event as junior Javier Lopez-Ibarra and Archuleta could both bring home javelin titles. Lopez-Ibarra has the second-best throw this season and Archuleta is the defending champion from last season. Both student-athletes hold North Texas school records in javelin.

The Mean Green will finish the outdoor championships on Sunday, May 13, concluding with the men’s and women’s 4x400-meter relay, getting underway at 8:50 p.m.
