DAY TWO: SBC Outdoor Track & Field Championships
MURFREESBORO, Tennessee (5/09/09) The University of North Texas track and field team collected 17 qualifying marks for Sunday’s finals of the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, including three each in the women’s 100-meter dash and men’s 200-meter dash, Saturday evening in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
“Today was a pretty good day for us as far as qualifying for the finals tomorrow,” North Texas head coach Rick Watkins said. “Your goal is always to make it to the finals healthy and save as much energy as possible. I think we’re going to make a big charge tomorrow. There’s a lot of points to be had on that track tomorrow.”
Going into Sunday’s action the men are sixth with 16 points while the women are in eighth place with 14 points.
Sprinters Alysha Adams, Brittani Simmons and Lauren Wiggins had a big day on the women’s side as each qualified for the finals in two events each. Both Adams and Wiggins broke the Middle Tennessee stadium record in the 100-meter hurdles as Adams (13.71) and Wiggins (13.73) had the top two times respectively. Simmons had the second best time in both the 200-meter dash (24.15) and 100-meter dash (11.83).
Other qualifiers on the women’s side included Sara Dietz (800-meter run), Shayla Hart (400-meter dash) and Ashley Harvey (400-meter hurdles).
On the men’s side, Andrew Turner (6711 points) and Jordan Wehr (6710 points) finished second and third respectively in the decathlon. Wehr broke the school record in the pole vault competition with a height of 17-06.50. Long distance runner Garrett Sage finished the second day events by finishing fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:19.42.
Freshman sprinter Keyth Talley qualified in both the 100-meter dash (10.55) and 200-meter dash (21.14). C.J. Fowler (21.31) and Ryan Varner (21.35) joined Talley in reaching the finals in the 200-meter dash with NCAA Regional qualifying times of their own.
Terry McGill (110-meter hurdles) and Reggie Hayter (800-meter run) also advanced to the finals in their respective events with season best times. Darnell Greig will also be competing in the finals on Sunday after qualifying in the 400-meter dash (47.82).
The third and final day of the Sun Belt Outdoor Track and Field Championships will begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the finals of the men’s hammer throw. Be sure to check meangreensports.com for the final results.
