Pole Vaulters Lead Way On Day One Of SBC Championships


MURFREESBORO, Tennessee (5/08/09) North Texas’ women’s track and field team will begin Saturday morning in fifth place at the 2009 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships after posting solid results on day one in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

The Mean Green got a school record and fourth-place performance from junior pole vaulter Christal Brewster with her NCAA Regional qualifying height of 12-07.50. Her previous best was 12-04.00 at the Sooner Invitational in April.

Following Brewster in the pole vault was junior Shelley Hollingsworth, who finished sixth with a mark of 11-07.75. Junior Kellie Delka and senior Stephanie Womack finished eighth and 13th respectively.

In the women’s discus senior Shauna Shepherd finished a team-best seventh place with a throw of 140-10. Alana Tyler (133-06), Elizabeth Dominguez (133-00) and Chelsey Carrigan (121-08) finished behind Shepherd.  

Ingrid Mollenkompf completed the final event of the day by finishing ninth in the women’s 1,000 meter run (39:45.51).

On the men’s side both senior Andrew Turner and sophomore Jordan Wehr began the two-day men’s decathlon with strong performances. Wehr won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.17 while Turner came in first in the 400-meter dash with a finish of 50.49. Turner is in second place heading into Saturday with 3699 points while Wehr is fourth with 3472 points.

Josue Nunez also finished 15th in the 1,000 meter run in a time of 34:21.23. Senior Brock Stickler did not place in the men’s discus after fouling in all three throws.

Action will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the completion of the decathlon.
