ARLINGTON, Texas (5/06/06) Thanks to her efforts at the UTA Open on Saturday, North Texas senior Ciji Brooks will be representing the Mean Green in two events at the NCAA Midwest Regional track meet for a third straight season.
The senior notched a regional qualifying time of 13.89 in the 100-meter hurdles, earning third place. Brooks’ time is the fourth fastest in school history and the second best in the Sun Belt Conference this year.
Brooks qualified in the shot put at the Jason’s Deli Mean Green Twilight last week with her season-best toss of 47-feet-2-1/2-inches.
Heath Smith earned his first gold medal of the outdoor season with a victory in the shot put. The junior earned the win with a throw of 51-feet-2-3/4-inches.
David Schwein was just fractions of a second away from qualifying for regionals with his third place finish in the 200-meter run. The sophomore crossed the line with a time of 21.23, four-hundredths of a second off the regional mark. Schwein’s time is the third best in the Sun Belt this season and the top by a North Texas athlete in 2006.
Mark Lee continued to show his regional dominance in the high jump on Saturday. The junior’s jump of 6-feet-8-3/4-inches earned him a second place finish, and gives him a top-three finish in four of his last five meets.
The Mean Green return to action on May 12-14 at the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships in Lafayette, La.
