DENTON, Texas (5/05/09) On the heels of perhaps their best performance of the season at the Mean Green Twilight, the North Texas track and field team was rewarded with three more Sun Belt Conference Performers of the Week Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman sprinter Keyth Talley was named the men’s track Performer of the Week for the second time in his young career. Talley capped off the regular season by claiming his fifth and sixth NCAA Regional qualifying times of the season by winning the 100-meter dash (10.35) and 200-meter dash (20.74), both career bests.
Heading into the Sun Belt Conference Championships this weekend, Talley enters with the best time in the Sun Belt in both the 100m and 200m. He is also 13th in the country in the 200m and 19th in the 100m.
Senior sprinter Lauren Wiggins was also honored after she won gold in the 100-meter hurdles (13.47) and broke her own school record for the second straight week. For Wiggins, it was her third first place finish of the season and she maintained the top time in the Sun Belt and is now ranked 25th in the nation.
New to the award was senior thrower Brock Stickler, who shattered the school record in the discus three weeks ago and has continued two break his own record in back-to-back weeks. Last Thursday Stickler had his best throw of the season (182-03) and sits atop number one in the Sun Belt and 28th in the nation.
The Mean Green track and field team will take part in the Sun Belt Conference Championships this weekend in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Action begins Friday, May 8 and runs through Sunday.
