NT Track Strong In Final Tune-Up Before SBC Championships

ARLINGTON, Texas (5/3/08) The University of North Texas track and field team posted four first place finishes and eight season best Saturday at the UTA Open in Arlington.

The meet served as final run-through for the Mean Green before it hosts the 2008 Sun Belt Outdoor Track and Field Championships next weekend.

“I felt that this was a really good tune-up for us heading into next week,” said head track and field coach Rick Watkins. “I think we’re in good shape, on both sides, to be able to compete for the conference title.”

Alana Tyler was one of three North Texas women to tally a first place finish on Saturday. Tyler, a junior from Dallas, won the weight throw for the third consecutive week with a toss of 169-09. Racquel Hudson beat out five other competitors to take home top honors in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.91.

The quartet of Alysha Adams, Lauren Wiggins, Rachael Runnels and Keisha Hornsby posted a mark of 45.79 in the 4X100 relay for a first place finish. The Mean Green currently has the second-fastest time in the Sun Belt this season in the 4X100.

The men’s 4X100 team of Kelvin Wright, Ryan Roberson, Byron Washington and Reggie McCarther also earned first place edging out Northwestern State with a time of 41.50.

The SBC Championships will get started Friday, May 9 at Fouts Field. The men’s decathlon will kick off the three-day championships Friday morning at 9 a.m.
