DENTON (5/02/06) The North Texas track and field team took a time-out to help Denton ISD students at the 10th annual Fifth Grade All-Star Track Meet at Fouts Field.
The meet featured fifth graders from nine DISD schools competing in multiple running, jumping and throwing events. Mean Green athletes, such as Mark Lee and Ciji Brooks, assisted with each event, provided a little instruction, and even signed a few autographs afterwards.
Meet organizers hope this introduction to track and field helps motivate the children to stay involved with sports as they head into middle and high school.
“I think all the kids had a great time, and having North Texas host us was a tremendous help,” said director Becky Proctor. “Next year we hope to get all 13 DISD elementary schools to come out.”
Becky and her husband Dan, along with their practice at Denton Sports and Physical Therapy, have been organizing the meet since its inception a decade ago. The All-Star meet began with two participating schools at a high school track and has grown by leaps and bounds ever since.
“We see kids running high school track now that competed as fifth graders in this meet. It’s a great feeling to know that this event might have had something to do with it.”
