DENTON – The North Texas track & field teams will compete at the Bobcat Classic hosted by Texas State on April 28-29 at the Texas State University Track and Field Stadium.
The Mean Green will be participating with UT-Rio Grande Valley, Incarnate Word, Stephen F. Austin, Houston Baptist, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas State, Texas A&M-Commerce, Huston-Tillotson, Our Lady of the Lake and Oklahoma City.
“We are taking what we hope will be our conference championship teams,” head coach Carl Sheffield said. “Athletes competing this week are vying for spots to travel to El Paso, in two weeks for the Conference USA outdoor championships.”
North Texas will be looking for top times and marks to move up in conference rankings heading into the C-USA outdoor championships in two weeks.
The men’s team is sending 25 student-athletes as sophomore James Cole and senior Collin Heard will be in the 200-meter dash, 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay. Freshman Howard Grant and senior Dominique Drayden will be competing in the long jump.
Junior Kevone Kennedy and freshman Karl Sralla will be participating in the hammer throw and discus. Sophomore Javier Lopez-Ibarra is hoping to continue his solid season in the javelin.
Distance runners James Coleman, Florian Lussy, Alex Cleveland and Rick Nally are entered in the 1500-meter run. In the 800-meter run, junior Zach Kirkland, freshman Tim Jones and Cleveland will be competing.
“We had a good week of training this week,” Sheffield said. “Recovery consists of improving hydration methods, working with our athletic training team to fix any deficiencies or restrictions. Our biggest concern to moderating the outside stressors that tend to build up around final exams and big competitions.”
The women’s squad also will be bringing 25 student-athletes to compete as freshman Breanna Eckels is entered in the long jump and triple jump. Senior Jazmine Martin will be participating in the triple jump and is part of the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay team.
Freshmen Linnea Larsson-Huusko will be in the hammer throw and Kristyn Archuleta will be competing in the javelin.
In the distance events, sophomore Cassidy Adams will be taking part in the 1500-meter run and the 3000-meter steeplechase. Classmate Catalina Uriarte also is entered in the 1500m and the 3000m steeplechase. Seniors Susie Kemper and Kylee Kittrell will run in the 800-meter and the 1500m events. Also competing in the 1500-meter run are sophomore Kellee McCann and junior Christina Moralez.
“This last meet is just to fine tune,” Sheffield added. “We want to give our relays a little more confidence in running together and allow people to compete in events that we hope can score at the championships.”
