DENTON (4/22/04) - The North Texas track and field team enjoyed the comforts of Fouts Field as they captured five first place finishes and notched several season best marks at the Mean Green Twilight Invitational.
Leading the way for the Mean Green was Chastidy Russell who won the 200-meter dash with a season best time of 24.68. Russell also had a career-best time in the 100-meter dash as she just missed an NCAA Regional qualifying mark by one-one hundredth of a second with a time of 11.79. The regional qualifying time is 11.78. However Russell's time in the 100-meter dash is the fourth best in school history.
Russell wasn't the only North Texas athlete with close calls as Derek Logan also missed out on an NCAA Regional mark in the 200-meter dash by one-one hundredth of a second with a season best time of 21.20.
Sprinters Arthur Cox and David Turner also turned in season-best times in the 400-meter dash as Cox had a time of 47.28 and Turner checked in at 47.41. Cox's time is the third best in the Sun Belt Conference this season.
Other top performers for North Texas included Bonnie McKernan who won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 12:40.40. The women's 4x400 relay team also took home first place with a time of 3:50.92. In the field events Jessica Henderson won the discus with a throw of 143-7.
For the men Justin Kauffman won the 800-meter run with a season-best time of 155:55. Kauffman also took home a second place finish in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:58.99. Matt Gieringer had a second place showing the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:03.87.
The Mean Green will next compete at the UTA Invitational on May 1.
