WACO, Texas (4/18/09) The North Texas track team performed admirably Saturday at the Baylor Michael Johnson Classic, placing 13 athletes in the top three and capturing six NCAA Regional qualifying marks.
Once again Jermaine Jamison won the high jump, tying the school record he set two weeks ago (7.00-50). Saturday marked the third week in a row that Jamison has won gold and it was the fourth time he has set an NCAA Regional qualifying mark.
North Texas received two more first place performances and NCAA Regional qualifying marks from senior’s Ciara Smith and Lauren Wiggins. Smith, who was just named the Sun Belt Conference Performer of the Week, won the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.99. Smith also set a regional mark in the 400-meter dash invitational by finishing sixth (54.47).
Wiggins claimed her second individual title of the season with a 13.80 time in the 100-meter hurdles.
Pole vaulter Christal Brewster re-tied the school record she set last week with the height of 12-01.50, finishing second. In the long distance competitions Carleigh Kutac finished second in the 800-meter run in her first meet of the season and Amanda Kean finished second as well in the 1500-meter run.
North Texas will next be in action Saturday, April 25 when they travel to Norman, Oklahoma for the Oklahoma Invitational.
