DENTON (4/13/06) The North Texas track and field team returns home to Denton this Saturday to host the Brooks/North Texas Spring Classic at Fouts Field.
The Mean Green will be hosting one of the region’s biggest meets that will include Baylor, Texas Tech, UTA, TCU, Arkansas St., Abilene Christian, SMU, Oklahoma State and Arkansas.
The field includes three teams ranked on the Trackwire 25 (Texas Tech men 7th, TCU men T15th, Baylor men T18th), and numerous athletes listed among the nation’s best.
Several Mean Green athletes seem to be hitting their strides just in time for the first of two home meets. Last weekend, Brandi Stanfield recorded the nation’s third best long jump and fifth best triple jump of the year in her first collegiate outdoor attempts. The indoor All-American put up a North Texas and Sun Belt record triple jump of 44-feet-3-1/2-inches, toppling the previous conference mark by nine inches and the school record by over 2-1/2-feet.
The freshman was only a quarter of an inch away from the Sun Belt long jump record with her leap of 20-feet-10-1/2-inches. Stanfield, who won Section B of the long jump, was second only to Miami’s Brenda Faluade of Section A, who landed the nation’s best jump of 2006. Stanfield’s leap is the second best in school history. The Austin, Texas native, is now qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional meet in both events.
Distance runner Cassie Storms recorded the Sun Belt’s top 10,000-meter time of the season at the Texas Relays. The senior finished in 39:07.67, nearly two minutes faster than the previous conference best time. Storms’ mark is the fourth best in North Texas history.
Heather Wood also proved a sturdy competitor last weekend with a shot put throw of 47-feet-1/2-inch. The toss ranks as the second best in school history, and earned the Georgia transfer an NCAA Regional Birth. This will be the junior’s second trip to Regionals, but her first since arriving at North Texas.
Field events begin at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday, with running events kicking off at 2:30 p.m. Live results will be available right here on MeanGreenSports.com.
