(04-12-05) - On the strength of her record-setting performances at the Texas Relays Deidra Wesley was named the Sun Belt Conference's Women's Field Athlete of the Week.
The junior became the first North Texas athlete to qualify for the NCAA Meet in the heptathlon, breaking her own school record with a 5,030 point performance.
In the process Wesley also tied the school record in the high jump. Her leap of 1.75-meters qualified her for the regional meet for the third consecutive year and tied Maria Spencer's 2002 jump.
Wesley now holds the Sun Belt's top mark in both events this season. This is the first time in the outdoor season Wesley has been named Athlete of the Week. She was named to the honor in the indoor season for the week of February 8.
Wesley and the Mean Green will return to action this weekend at the John Jacobs Invitational.
