North Texas Wins 10 Events Friday At North Texas Classic


DENTON, Texas (4/11/08) Hosting its first outdoor meet of the season, the North Texas track and field team looked right at home as the Mean Green tallied 10 first place finishes and three regional qualifying marks at the North Texas Classic Friday night.

Brandi Stanfield posted a regionally qualifying mark and earned first place honors in the long jump with a leap of 19-11.50; nearly a foot better than her nearest competitor. Stanfield, a junior from Austin, Texas, has now qualified in both the long and triple jump this season. Not to be outdone, Ciara Smith and Alysha Adams tallied regional times at the North Texas Classic.


Smith, who qualified last week as a member of the 4X400 relay team, finished second in the 400-meter dash with a season-best mark of 54.45. Smith also earned first place in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 24.33. After posting two second place finishes this season, Adams took top honors in the 100-meter hurdles with a mark of 13.89.


After Friday, the Mean Green has now qualified athletes for the NCAA Midwest Regionals in eight separate events. In all, North Texas tallied 14 season-best marks Friday afternoon.


Shelley Hollingsworth, the North Texas record holder in the ­indoor pole vault, etched her name into the Mean Green record books, clearing 11-07.75 to take home second place honors in the women's pole vault.


Jessica Torres (3000 steeplechase), Jermaine Jamison (high jump), Ryan Varner (400 dash), Keisha Hornsby (100 dash), Byron Washington (100 dash), Brandon Cooper (3000 run) and the women’s 4X100 relay also all took home first place honors.

The Mean Green track and field team will next head south to Fort Worth to compete in the TCU Invitational next Saturday.
