AUSTIN, Tex. (4/6/07) Making her first jump of the season, North Texas sophomore Brandi Stanfield stood out in the long jump in the second day of the Texas Relays from Mike Myers Stadium. Stanfield finished in seventh place with a leap of 5.98 meters (19-7.50) to just miss out on the regional qualifying mark of 6.00 meters.
She was the lone bright spot in a day that saw the North Texas track and field teams struggle for most of the afternoon in a star-studded field that features some of the nation’s top athletes
“We were not on top of our game today,” said North Texas head coach Rick Watkins. “The weather wasn’t ideal but we still needed to perform better than we did”.
On the women’s side sophomore Lauren Wiggins had a time of 14.25 in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles but failed to qualify for the finals. Senior high-jumper Ryan Hill cleared 5-7 to finish in 11th place while Heather Wood had a toss of 45-10.50 in the shot put.
For the men freshman Patrick Strong had a standout performance in the 5,000-meter run. Strong finished in 10th place with a time of 15:03.29. The 4x100 relay team clocked in at 41.43 to finish in third place in their preliminary heat, but did not advance to the finals.
