White Sets Record in Texas Relays Prelims

AUSTIN, Texas - Mean Green track & field completed the preliminaries at the prestigious Texas Relays on Friday and notched two first place finishes.

Junior Steven White bested a 58-year old school record in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 50.75 seconds.  White was the only participant who recorded a sub 51-second time in the preliminaries.

That time is good enough to lead the Sun Belt Conference, sit sixth in the NCAA and fourth in the NCAA West Division.

Matt Russ was the other North Texas athlete to claim a first-place finish when he took the top finishing spot in the men's 1,500. Running in only his second race since two weeks before the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships, the junior nabbed a 3:53.63 second time in the event, which puts him second overall on the SBC Performance List.

CJ Fowler and Johnny Hickman had good showings yet again in the 100-meter dash, with Fowler crossing the line in 10.72 seconds and Hickman registering a 10.85 second time.

The men's 4x100-meter relay team took home a 14th place finish in 41.11 seconds, while the 4x400 tabbed 18th overall.

North Texas will return to the track tomorrow for the finals of the 85th annual Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
