DENTON (3/14/03) North Texas athletes in two events earned spots in the NCAA Midwest Regional meet later this spring with qualifying performances Friday at the UNT Invitational track and field meet at Fouts Field.
In the first outdoor meet of the season, the Mean Green qualified for the regional meet in the women’s 4x100 meter relay and freshman Deidre Wesley won the women’s high jump with a qualifying height of 5-7.
The North Texas foursome of Felicia Jones, Ananka Clark, Osaze Aghedo and Chastidy Russell earned the right to participate in the regional in the 4x100 relay, winning the event with a time of 46.11 seconds.
The NCAA Midwest Regional will be held on May 30-31 and gives athletes a chance at qualifying for the NCAA Championships on June 11-14.
In Friday’s season-opening meet, which included teams representing UT-Arlington, Grambling, Southwest Christian, SMU and Oklahoma, no team points were compiled.
Also for North Texas, sophomores Jarrod Stone and Tiffanie Jordan were double winners. Stone captured first place in both the triple jump (14.42 meters) and high jump (6-7.5 inches) while Jordan won the 100-meters (12.62) as well as the triple jump (11.99 meters).
Other Mean Green performers who won their events included Sammy Dabbs in the men’s 110-meter hurdles (15.62), Justin Kauffman in the men’s 3,000-meter run (8:58.6) and Dagmar Salazar in the women’s 1,500-meter run (4:46.8). North Texas teams also swept the top two places in the women’s 4x400-meter relay event.
The Mean Green are scheduled to participate in the Texas A&M Multi-Events meet on March 20-21.
