DENTON (3/1/07) A trio of Mean Green athletes will make their way to Fayetteville, Ark. this weekend for a last chance at qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Sophomore triple jumper Brandi Stanfield is looking to make her second consecutive trip to the national meet, but will have to improve on her NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 12.75 meters (41 feet, 10 inches) to make the journey. Stanfield had already provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships at the J.D. Martin Invitational with a mark of 12.71 meters, but improved that mark by winning the Sun Belt Conference indoor title on Sunday. Last season Stanfield took 11th place at nationals and was the only freshman to compete at the meet.
Also making the trek to Fayetteville will be high jumpers Toby Edwards and Mark Lee. Edwards was just recently crowed champion at the Sun Belt indoors when he cleared 2.11 meters (6 feet, 11 inches) for his first career win. The sophomore had three cracks at the provisional qualifying mark of 2.16 meters, narrowly missing.
Lee will be attempting to qualify for the first time for the national meet, and has had his shots at the provisional qualifying mark along the way as well. Lee jumped a season best 2.11 meters at the Texas Tech Invitational, and that mark still stands as the second best in the conference this season.
If any of the three qualify for the national meet, it will be held March 9-10 in Fayetteville, Ark.
