NT Track & Field Readies For SBC Championships

Complete Notes

DENTON, Texas (2/27/09) The North Texas track and field team will head north this weekend to compete in the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Both of the Mean Green women's and men's teams will be looking to improve on last year’s third place finish in Murfreesboro. Western Kentucky was this year’s coaches’ selection to finish first place on the women’s side. The Hilltoppers were followed by Middle Tennessee and North Texas in third place.

North Texas will hope to pick up momentum with the help of sprinters Alysha Adams, Ciara Smith and Lauren Wiggins. Adams is first in the SBC in the 55 meter hurdles with an NCAA provisional time (7.83) and sixth in the 55-meter dash (7.19). Adams’ also possesses the eight fastest mark in the conference in the 200 meters with time of 25.02.

Smith, who was an indoor all-conference performer last year in the 4X400, has bounced back from an early season injury and looks to be in mid-season form. Wiggins currently holds the second best mark in the 55-meter hurdles behind Adams with a time of 7.95.

On the men's side the Mean Green are anchored by freshman Keyth Talley. The Tuscaloosa, AL native has raised eyebrows in his first season by breaking the school record twice in the 60-meters and brings with him an NCAA provisional time (6.74).

North Texas will also send out senior Toby Edwards (high jumper) and sophomore Jordan Wehr (multi). Each has won the Sun Belt Conference Performer of the Week award this season. Wehr currently leads the conference with the top points mark (5094) in the SBC and Edwards has the second highest jump in the conference.
