NT Track And Field Readies For Conference Championships

DENTON, Texas (2/22/08) The North Texas track and field team will head north this weekend to compete in the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships in Murfreesboro, Tenn..


The Mean Green women will be looking to improve on last year’s fourth place finish. Western Kentucky was this year’s coaches’ selection to finish first place on the women’s side. The Hilltoppers were followed by Middle Tennessee and North Texas in third place.


The Mean Green of North Texas will hope to pick up momentum with the help of sprinters Lauren Wiggins and Ciara Smith. Wiggins is first in the SBC in the 55 meter hurdles with an NCAA provisional time and fifth in the 55-meter dash. Wiggins’ also possesses the 10th fastest mark in the nation in the 60-meter hurdles with time of 8.25.


Smith, a sophomore from Round Rock, Texas, is currently first in both the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. Brandi Stanfield will be seeking her third triple jump title in as many years.


On the men’s side, underclassmen and youth will lead the way for the North Texas men who placed fifth in 2006. Toby Edwards and freshman Jermaine Jamison rank first and third in the Sun Belt in the high jump.
