NORMAN, Oklahoma (2/21/09) Sophomore Alysha Adams highlighted the final indoor meet of the regular season for North Texas with a first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.40) and setting an NCAA Provisional Mark Saturday at the Sooner Open II.
“It was a good day for Alysha,” North Texas head coach Rick Watkins said. “She finally got that provision time, she’s been working hard at earning that all season.”
Adams, who was the 2008 SBC Indoor Freshman of the Year, had a previous best time of 8.45 in the 60-meter hurdles earlier this season at Houston. She also ran well in the 60-meter dash Saturday, finishing fifth with a time of 7.68.
Freshman-sensation sprinter Keyth Talley was held out of competition on Saturday due to an illness. Despite his absence North Texas still had a solid showing in the 60-meter dash. Byron Washington (6.95), C.J. Fowler (6.99) and Justin Flowers (7.07) all posted season-best times in Norman.
In the field events Alana Tyler set a season-best distance in the weight throw (55-11.00) and finished second. The Mean Green also got a second-place performance from Christal Brewster in the pole vault (10-10.25) and a third place finish from Brandi Stanfield in the triple jump (18-00.50).
Although North texas didn't participate in many events, Watkins felt like the team accomplished what they needed to. "We came in trying to sharpen up everything and stay fresh for next week," he said. "We feel pretty good going to to Arkansas."
North Texas will now set their eyes on the Sun Belt Conference Championships next week in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Competition runs Feb. 28-Mar. 1 and live stats will be available at http://www.sunbeltsports.org/.
