Norman, Okla. (2/17/07) The North Texas track and field team completed its final meet before the Sun Belt Conference Championships at the Sooner Indoor Open Saturday afternoon.

The Mean Green saw its indoor weight throw record fall for the third time this season as Alana Tyler bettered her school record with a toss of 55-10.25 feet. The sophomore held the school's record entering the season before Shauna Shepherd claimed it in the season's first meet. Tyler reclaimed the mark at the J.D. Martin Invitational.

Fernanda Mackenna finished first in the 400-meter dash with a season-best time of 55.76 seconds, just shy of the school record which is 55.51 seconds. Overall, there were four top-ten finishes in the women’s 400 meters including Ciara Smith, who finished third with a time of 56.32 seconds. Chi Chi Echebelem also finished fourth with a time of 57.38, and Ashley Harvey claimed eighth with a time of 59.82 seconds.

Senior jumper Ryan Hill also had a solid finish, taking second in the high jump with a season-best leap of 5-07.

The Mean Green women had three qualifiers in the women’s 60-meter dash. Keisha Hornsby tied for sixth place in the preliminary round and notched a season-best time of 7.62 seconds. She also finished in sixth place in finals with the same time.

On the men's side of the card it was Heath Smith leading the way with his second-place finish in shot put, throwing 52-08.25 feet. That stands as Smith's season best, and the third best in the conference in 2007.

High jumper Toby Edwards brought back fourth place in only his second meet of the season, clearing 6-09 feet in the process.

Other notable performances for the men include Terry Lewis' season-best time of 8.13 in the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries, and then his 8.15 seconds in the finals was good enough for fifth. Lewis also turned in a fourth-place time of 50.10 seconds in the 400-meter dash.

The team travels to Jonesboro, Ark. Feb. 24-25 to compete in the Sun Belt Conference Championships.
