FAYETTVILLE, Ark. (2/15/08) While her teammates have a weekend off before the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships, junior hurdler Lauren Wiggins is competing against some of the nation’s best; and beating many of them.
Wiggins, who has set the school record in the hurdles in every meet for the last three weeks, was extended an invite to one of the nation’s premiere indoor track meets, the Tyson Invitational on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
“This is a meet that they don’t let just anyone enter,” said head coach Rick Watkins. “The Arkansas coach saw her run at the Oklahoma meet and was really impressed with her.”
In Friday’s prelims, Wiggins qualified for a spot in Saturday’s finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.36. In a field of 85, including many top NCAA hurdlers, Wiggins’ time ranked 11th best.
“Lauren is competing against some of the best in the nation,” Watkins said. “To be included in that list is an honor in itself.”
Wiggins will conclude her stay at the Tyson Invite tomorrow with finals beginning shortly before 2 p.m.
