DENTON, Texas (2/14/08) For the second consecutive week, a North Texas women’s track athlete has been honored by the Sun Belt as Track Athlete of the Week.
One week after Lauren Wiggins set a school record in the 60-meter hurdles, teammate Ciara Smith followed suite with a school record of her own. Smith, a sophomore from Round Rock, Texas, recorded a time of 55.13 in the 400-meter dash, placing second in the event.
The time was a full second-and-a-half faster than Smith’s previous season best. As if one school record wasn’t enough, Smith aimed for her second record of the day in the 200-meter dash.
The sophomore from Round Rock finished second in the 200 dash with a personal-best time of 24.45; just four-hundredth of a second off the school record. Smith's times were the fastest in the Sun Belt so far this season in both the 200 and 400-meter dash.
The North Texas track team will take the weekend off before traveling to Murfreesboro, Tenn. for the SBC Indoor Championships Feb. 23-24.
