Freshman Duo Shatters School Records At ISU Classic

AMES, Iowa (2/11/06) The track and field young guns continued to amaze as a pair of freshmen shattered school records at the Iowa State Classic on Saturday.

The Mean Green was led by Brandi Stanfield, who put up the nation’s tenth-best triple jump of the season. The freshman leaped 42-feet-6.75-inches, shattering the school record by well over a foot.

The jump not only clips Dionte Campbell’s 1999 record, but also provisionally qualifies Stanfield for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Stanfield would be the first North Texas athlete to participate in the indoor NCAA’s.

Not to be outdone, Lauren Wiggins smashed her own two-week-old record in the semi-finals of the 60-meter hurdles. The freshman’s time of 8.47 seconds broke the record and sent Wiggins to the finals of the 78-woman field. Wiggins went on to finish eighth with a time of 8.69.

Rachael Runnels also notched a top-10 finished in the 60-meter dash. The school-record holder had a time of 7.58 seconds, earning eighth place.

On the men’s side, Mark Lee finished seventh in the high jump with a leap of 6-feet-8.25-inches.

Next up for the Mean Green is the Sooner Indoor Meet on February 18 in Norman, Okla.
