Mean Green Competes With Nation's Best In Day One Of The Iowa State Classic




AMES, Iowa (2/9/07) A select group of North Texas athletes opened up competition on Friday at one of the country’s premier meets, the Iowa State Classic.

 

After claiming the top three spots in the 200-meter dash at the J.D. Martin Invitational, head coach Rick Watkins sent out five runners into the event, ach of the five turned in their fastest time of the season. In the largest event of the day - 148 runners - the Mean Green placed four runners in the top 35 slots.

 

Brandi Stanfield led the way in 24.86 seconds, which was good enough for 19th place overall and is the fourth fastest time in the Sun Belt so far this season. Rachel Runnels, Ciara Smith, Keisha Hornsby, and Chi Chi Echebelem also turned in solid efforts in the event.

 

Also competing on Friday was Lisa Nolting in the long jump.  With her best leap of the season, 17-10.25, put her in 31st place. Leah Kincaid of Purdue claimed the long jump title with a NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 20-01.75.

 

Lauren Wiggins rounded out the day for the Mean Green by claiming 30th place with a 9.11 second time in the 60-meter hurdles.

 

On the men's side it was Ryan Varner who took a 36th-place finish in 200 meters in 22.05 seconds. Once again, the 200 meters was the deepest field of the day with 134 runners. Byron Washington and Kelvin Wright each also turned in solid times in the event, with Washington turning in his fastest time of the season in 22.51. Wright turned in a time of 22.57.

 

The only other competitor for hte Mean Green was Terry Lewis who claimed 27th out of 73 runners in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.32 seconds.

 

The Iowa State Classic will continue on Saturday with competition beginning at 9:25 a.m. with the women’s 3,000-meter run. The weekend will conclude with the 4x400 relay at 7:15 p.m.
