Mean Green Field Events Shine in Lubbock
The North Texas field team shined at the Red Raider Open on Saturday at the Athletic Training Center on the campus of Texas Tech University, hauling in seven top five finishes and a school record.
LUBBOCK, Texas - The North Texas field team shined at the Red Raider Open on Saturday at the Athletic Training Center on the campus of Texas Tech University, hauling in seven top-five finishes and a school record.
Sophomore thrower Charleston Lewis broke the school record he set last week in the weight throw on Saturday morning with a toss of 16.78m or 55-00.75 feet. Lewis would also finish in seventh in his flight of the shot put.
Another sophomore, Sarah Vann, set her personal best in the pole vault as she cleared the bar at 3.65m for a third place finish. Freshman Jessica McNew and fellow sophomore Sarah Korn finished sixth and seventh respectively.
Shahaf Bareni brought home a second place finish in the high jump, topping 1.70m, with teammate Chelsea Hermes right behind her in fourth with a jump of 1.65m.
Junior Aaron Sirles moved up on the Sun Belt Performance List in the shot put when he bombed a 55-05.00 foot toss. That mark is good enough for second in the conference through the first four weeks of the season. He also finished in fifth in the weight throw.
Freshman Ellie Arends nabbed a sixth-place finish in the mile run in 5:19.46, 11 seconds in front of junior teammate Carly Griffith.
Deja McKnight, a freshman thrower, added to the strong day for the field athletes, with a fifth place finish in the shot put at 13.37m.
Aleksi Ikonen led the men's distance runners in the mile run, taking sixteenth, just three spots ahead of Austin Yaeger.
Mean Green track & field will be back in action next week at the Iowa State Classis in Ames, Iowa. The meet begins Thursday morning and runs through Saturday Afternoon.
