Indoor Conference USA Championship Two Weeks Away
DENTON – The North Texas track and field teams will head to the Herm Wilson Invitational Feb. 3-4 at the Heskett Center Indoor track and field facility.
Division I schools competing are UMKC, Oral Roberts and Wichita State. Junior colleges competing are Cowley County, Dodge City, Garden City, and Butler County.
Division I field events are broken up between Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Mean Green will compete in the women's long jump. At 6:30 p.m., the women's pole vault begins. The men's high jump is set for 7:45 p.m.
On Saturday, field events will continue at 11 a.m. and the final event will conclude with the men’s 4x400-meter relay at 7 p.m.
“It was good to see a different level of competition last week at the JD Martin Invitational,” head coach Carl Sheffield said. “It fits into our preparation for a high quality conference performance. We will have to raise our game to compete well at the conference meet.”
Competing Friday night for the Mean Green are freshman high jumper CJ Gilmore, freshman long jumper Breanna Eckels, and pole vaulters Kristen Adair, Bailey Ashmore, Blake Skoog.
Senior triple jumper Jazmine Martin will compete Saturday in the triple jump and has the highest mark in the field at 12.77 meters. Senior sprinter Collin Heard (6.92) will be running the 60-meter dash in the first heat and classmate Jamison Justice (7.02) will be in the second heat.
Four men’s distance runners will be running in the 3000-meter run led by freshman Florian Lussy and seven women’s distance athletes paced by Susannah Lynch.
The Herm Wilson Invitational will be another team scored meet and will give North Texas another opportunity to showcase its top talent. The Mean Green will also take this meet to mentally prepare for the indoor conference meet in two weeks.
“Lots of rest and recuperation,” Sheffield said. “We are a little beat up and we need to get some key people rested and recovered for the next couple of weeks.”
The Mean Green have just one more indoor meet to get ready for the 2017 indoor Conference USA Championships starting Feb. 18 in Birmingham, Alabama.
