DENTON--Mean Green Track competes this Friday at the Masked Rider Invitational in Lubbock, Texas.

This is North Texas track and field’s third meet of the season. After some impressive performances from individual athletes, along with a second place finish for women and a third place finish for men at the Texas A&M Team Challenge,

“It has been a good start,” said head track and field coach Carl Sheffield.
“The week off from competing has not helped our preparation, but the weather has been good for training.”

“I would like to see us continue to sharpen our mental edge going into the month of February. We have had a competition and a few weeks to train after returning from the break. Its time to start adding some top performances to the Conference USA performance lists,” said Sheffield.

Sheffield says that North Texas will face competition from Texas Tech, the home team, as well as Sam Houston State and Abilene Christian University.

At Texas A&M and Oklahoma, North Texas Athletes Shahaf Bareni, Chastity Stewart, Mona Landry, Collin Heard, Tevaun Scallion, Deja McKnight and other Mean Green had podium finishes.

“We have had a pretty good week of weather and training. That always increases your confidence going into a competition,” said Sheffield.

“Distance runner Susie Kemper looks fit and ready to make an assault on the UNT record books, and transfer Dominique Best will enter her first multi-event competition as a North Texas athlete.”

Distance runners Troy Taylor and Bryce McAndrew placed first and second, respectively, in the 3000M run at the Texas A&M Invite on Jan. 16.

Sheffield also expects strong finishes from Deja McKnight, Jamison Justice, and Derek Richard during the 2014-15 indoor and outdoor seasons.
