North Texas Track & Field Set For JD Martin Invitational
Mean Green Ready For Fourth Indoor Meet
DENTON – The North Texas track and field teams will compete at the J.D. Martin Invitational hosted by the University of Oklahoma Saturday at Mosier Indoor track facility.
The field events will start at 10 a.m. with the women’s weight throw. The meet will conclude with the men’s mile relay at 4:25 p.m.
“We hope to see continued improvement from our younger athletes,” head coach Carl Sheffield said. “The change of venues and track facilities takes some getting used to. Now that they have seen a couple of different track surfaces, we hope to gain some confidence and consistency in our performances.”
Teams participating in the 16th J.D. Martin Invitational include men’s and women’s teams from Oklahoma, Texas Arlington, Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian. Central Oklahoma and Southern Methodist will send women’s teams only.
40 student-athletes will be competing for the Mean Green with 22 from the men’s team and 18 from the women’s squad. Sophomore sprinter Justin Joe will make his 2017 debut in the 60-meter dash, 200 meter dash and on the relay team. Freshman Howard Grant returns after earning first place in his collegiate debut in the long jump at the LSU meet.
Senior Jazmine Martin will be competing in the 200-meter dash and the long jump after earning first place in the triple jump at last week’s Kansas State invitational. Freshman Linnea Larsson-Huusko took fourth in the weight throw with a season-best mark of 15.61 meters at the Kansas State Invitational.
“We want to see our freshman thrower Linnea Larsson-Huusko gain some confidence in the weight throw,” Sheffield said. “Competing in indoors should give her the confidence that training is going in the right direction. Jamison Justice returns to his primary event after taking a week off from the 400-meters. He should be excited to see where he is performing in this event. We look for Lafiel Smith to continue to drop his times in the 60m hurdle event. He is also debuting in the 400m.”
The Mean Green have just two more indoor meets to get ready for the 2017 indoor Conference USA Championships starting Feb. 18.
