Track & Field Sending Full Team To Texas Tech Indoors
50 Competitors Will Compete For North Texas
DENTON – The North Texas track and field teams will use the Texas Tech Classic as a tune up for the upcoming Conference USA indoor championships in three weeks. The Mean Green will have 50 competitors compete on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Sports Performance Center.
“We hope to finalize our Conference USA team that will travel to Birmingham from this weekend’s competition,” head coach Carl Sheffield said. “This is one of the last chances for people on the bubble to show quality of competition deserving to compete at C-USA. We are starting to show up in higher rankings on the performance list. We look to fill some events that will help our team’s chances in scoring at the conference championship.”
The teams competing will be Texas Tech, Abilene Christian, Incarnate Word, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Oklahoma, Sam Houston, Texas, UTA and UTEP for the two-day meet. North Texas will just be participating in the events on Saturday.
The men’s team will be sending 21 student-athletes to the Texas Tech Classic. Senior Dominique Drayden will be taking part in the triple jump and the long jump. The distance runners return with senior Mike Lowe, sophomore Florian Lussy, freshman Matthew Morgan and senior Rick Nally entered in the 3000-meter run. Freshman Shane Bracken and sophomore Tim Jones will run in the mile. Senior Kevone Kennedy, coming off a third-place finish last weekend, will compete again in the weight throw. Senior Alford Tribble leads the sprinters in the 60-meter and 200-meter dash. Graduate student Jaron Thomas will look to keep improving in the 60-meter hurdles and is part of the 4x400-meter relay team.
“Over the past two weeks we have competed our sprint group predominately,” Sheffield said. “This week we’ll focus on our middle and longer distance runners for quality points.”
The women’s team will be taking 29 student-athletes to the meet on Saturday. Senior Christina Moralez, junior Susannah Lynch and junior Cassidy Adams will run in the 3000m. Senior Victoria Junious and junior Baylee Nelson will compete in the 800-meter run. In the field events, freshman Valencia Bullock will be in the triple jump and long jump. Sophomore Kristyn Archuleta will throw the shot put and weight throw. Sophomore Bailey Ashmore, junior Hannah Winn and senior Kristen Adair will be in the pole vault. The sprinters will have Bria Williams, Sarah White, Jaida Johnson, Kiara Pickens and Taylor Blackshire all competing in the 60-meter dash.
“This team is a very talented team,” Sheffield said. “Our jobs as coaches are to guide some of the younger track athletes that being part of a team is as important as their individual goals.”
