LUBBOCK (1/24/04)- The North Texas men and women's Indoor track and field teams opened the 2004 season at the Texas Tech Quad with solid performances from both squads. On the women's side North Texas had a pair of second place finishes from Kim Williams in the 600-yard run and Stacy Orakpo in the shot put.
Williams, a true freshman from Denton High School, ran a time of 1:26.18 in the 600-yard dash while Orakpo, also a freshman from Denton High School, had a toss of 42-7 in the shot put. Jessica Henderson placed third in the shot put at 41-6. In the 55-meter hurdles Stephanie Allen had a time of 8.39 to place fifth and Ciji Brooks was seventh at 8.61.
Rhonda Williams, the sister of Kim, was not to be outdone as she had a time of 7.24 in the 55-meter dash to lead North Texas.
On the men's side David Turner, from Ryan High School, was fourth in the 600 yard dash with a time of 1:12.70 while Andre Douglas was fifth at 1:12.94. Distance runner Justin Kauffman placed third in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:31.60. The Mean Green 4x400 relay team had a time of 3:!5.04 to placed fourth.
"We started off very well today and a lot of people performed well for us," said North Texas head coach Rick Watkins.
The Mean Green return to action next week at the JD Martin Invitational in Norman Okla.
