The North Texas track and field team will kick off the 2005 season on Saturday at the OU Indoor Classic in Norman, Okla.
The Mean Green returns a host of key athletes from last season's team, including seven time all-conference performer Jarrod Stone and the school record setting women's 4x100 meter relay team.
Stone, the 2004 Sun Belt indoor high jump champion, is an NCAA Midwest Regional qualifier in the long and high jumps. Last season he also set the team season best jump of 7.49 meters, and should lead the team again this year in his senior season.
The sprint relay team of Rhonda Williams, Osaze Aghedo, Chastidy Russell and Ronniqua Wilson returns to the track fully intact after smashing the school record last season. The team made the finals at the NCAA Midwest Regional and posted a time of 45.40, breaking the record that stood for 21 years.
Deidra Wesley returns with her arsenal that includes a school record and conference championship in the heptathlon and a regional appearance in the high jump. The junior is the busiest member of the track team as she competed in eight events last season.
Both the men and the women are set in the distance events, with each side returning a conference champion. Matt Gieringer returns for the men after winning the 10,000 meters last season, and Jessica Schmidt, who was named Outstanding Performer of the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championship, won the 3,000 and 5,000 meter events in 2004.
