Mean Green Opens Season At Texas Tech Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas (1/19/07) The North Texas track and field team kicked off the 2007 season Friday on day one of the Texas Tech Invitational.


Triple-jump specialist Brandi Stanfield was not out of her element in the 200-meter dash, taking first in her debut time of 24.88 seconds.  Lisa Nolting took third in the long jump with a mark of 5.61 meters.


In the 600-yard run it was Tikisha Walwyn that finished second with a time of 1:30.81, while Shauna Shepherd’s shot put toss of 16.02 meters was far enough for her to claim a second-place finish of her own.


On the men’s side it was Temitayo Harriman that took gold in the 1000 meters at a time of 2:36.67. Harriman won the same event in the debut meet in 2006 held in Lubbock.


Heath Smith turned in a third-place showing in the hammer throw with a toss of 15.05 meters, and Toby Zelt cleared 15’1” to take sixth in the pole vault in his first meet as a member of the Mean Green.

Action continues at the invitational on Saturday, January 20th, with the triple jump scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The first running event on the day is set to be the women's 60-meter hurdles at 12:30 p.m.
