LUBBOCK, Texas (1/17/09) The North Texas track and field team wrapped up its weekend with two first place finishes at the Texas Tech Indoor Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Coming off a record-breaking 2008 season, senior Lauren Wiggins continued her dominance on Saturday with another first place finish in the 55-meter hurdles. Wiggins clocked in with the best time in the prelims (8.00) and finals (7.93) to add another notch to her already spectacular resume.
Senior Brandi Stanfield kicked off her 2009 campaign with a first place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 39-10.00. The Austin, Texas native repeated her performance from last season when she also took first in the triple jump at the Texas Tech Invitational. Last season Stanfield received all-conference honors in the indoor season triple jump and finished second at the SBC Championships.
“This was a pretty good opening week for us,” North Texas head coach Rick Watkins said. “It’s just good to get the season underway and seeing people start ahead of where they finished last year.”
Christal Brewster also made her mark on Saturday, setting an indoor school record in the pole vault by placing fourth with a height of 11-09.75, breaking Shelley Hollingsworth’s 2007 mark of 11-05.75.
Freshman sprinter Keyth Talley had a solid start to his North Texas tenure by finishing fourth in the 55-meter dash, clocking in at 6.29 and also finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.81.
Brittani Simmons, a sophomore out of Killeen, placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with a solid 24.68. She was also the women’s top performer in the 55-meter dash, finishing sixth with a time of 7.15.
Senior Brock Stickler, who spent the past four seasons on the Mean Green football, finished eighth in his first appearance in the shot put. The Lampasas native threw a distance of 44-01.50.
