Track & Field Concludes 2018 C-USA Outdoor Championships

HOUSTON - The North Texas track and field teams concluded the final day of the 2018 Conference USA outdoor championships with six all-conference winners on Sunday, May 13, at Wendel D. Ley Track.

The Mean Green finished the outdoor championships with six all-conference honorees, including three second-place finishes.

"It was an exciting year for all," head coach Carl Sheffield said. "I feel like it was a coming of age for our young athletes. We have grown as a team this semester and had the help of some gifted graduating seniors. I am really proud of how they persevered while at North Texas."

Junior Javier Lopez-Ibarra placed second in javelin with a throw of 64.17 meters (210-66 feet), coming just five feet from first place. Sophomore Kristen Archuleta came in third in javelin with a throw of 45.55 meters (149-05 feet).

Sophomore Bailey Ashmore was fifth in pole vault at 3.81 meters (12-6.00 feet). Junior Rea Iseli came in fifth in the 1500-meter run final with a personal-best time of 4:28.96.

In the men's 4x100-meter relay, the team of senior Alford Tribble, junior James Cole, senior Dominique Drayden and freshman Abdon Campbell took fourth with a personal-best time of 40.24.

Freshmen Lyric Choice placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles final with a time of 14.24 and Jazzman Clare was seventh at 14.50.

Freshmen Haley Walker finished fifth in shot put with a throw of 14.58 meters (47-10.00 feet) and Jaleisa Shaffer was seventh with a throw of 14.16 meters (46-5.50 feet).

In the final event, the women's 4x400-meter relay finished 10th as freshman Aneesa Scott, freshman Brittni Emanuel, freshman Lauryn McCollum and junior Bria Williams clocked in at 3:49.17.

The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Cole, Campbell, Tribble and Jacob Kevetter came in seventh at 3:19.28.

"All of our medalists will return next year," Sheffield said. "Almost all of the other qualifiers were also freshmen and sophomores. We have been very specific about rebuilding and developing our men's and women's team to compete in Conference USA. We feel confident that we have made good choices towards our future."
