Track Ends Season Strong, Looks to C-USA Championships
Distance Has Another Big Weekend in Austin
AUSTIN-- Texas has completed their last competition of the regular outdoor season, only two weeks before the C-USA Championships in El Paso, Texas.
"We will turn our attention towards putting individuals in the events we think will allow us to compete for a conference championship," said head coach Carl Sheffield. "Conference USA is a very competitive league from positions one through ten."
The Longhorn Invitational was North Texas's third and final competition at UT this outdoor season.
Senior Alejandro Valencia finished third in 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:08.14. Junior Troy Taylor placed fourth in the men's 1500m with a time of 3:45.44, Bryce McAndew finished close behind with a time of 3:46.75 that got him seventh place. Alex Hita placed tenth with a new PR of 1:52.56 in the 800m.
Both the men's and women's 4X100 meter relay teams placed fourth. Junior Eddie Wilcox also finished third in the men's high jump with a 2.05m jump.
In the women's 1500 meter, North Texas had many PRs, including Christina Moralez (4:37), Kylee Kittrell (4:44), and Leesa Moralez (4:44).
Ngozi Nweke placed eighth in the women's hammer throw with a 48.87m throw and Deja McKnight finished tenth in shot put (13.50m ).
Overall, the men's team placed eighth with 30 points, and the women's team placed 16th with 9 points.
North Texas competes at the Conference USA Championships on May 14, 2015. The championship will be hosted by UTEP in El Paso, Texas.
"Being able to score enough points to be competitive will come down to centimeters and hundreds of seconds. This is our sixth championship in the past two years. Our student-athletes are well aware of what we have to do to perform well," Sheffield said.
"I believe they are up to the challenge. We have moved up the in team standings through each championship, we expect to do the same this time."
