Track & Field Earns Podium Finishes At Baylor Invitational
Archuleta Wins Second Straight Javelin Title
WACO – The North Texas track & field team finished with three podium finishes, all from the throwers, Saturday at the 2017 Baylor Invitational at Clyde Hart track & field stadium.
"Continued improvement from the freshmen javelin throwers," head coach Carl Sheffield said. "They will only get better with high caliber competitions. I feel like the sprinters had a good beginning to their outdoor campaign. Collin Heard opened up just short of his career-best and it was an overall good meet. We look to improve individually over the next weeks to improve our team chances a month from now in El Paso."
Freshman Kristyn Archuleta finished first in javelin for the second-straight week and broke her own school record set last week with a throw of 48.77 meters (160 feet).
Sophomore Javier Lopez-Ibarra finished second in javelin with a throw at 60.32 meters (197-11 feet). Freshman Linnea Larsson-Huusko came in third in the women’s hammer throw at 50.82 meters (166-09 feet).
Junior Victoria Junious finished fourth in the 1500-meter run at 5:02.87 and freshman Darrian Johnson came in fifth at 5:06.48.
Senior Collin Heard came in sixth in the 200-meter dash with a season-best time of 21.04. Sophomore Kyle Maloney finished fifth in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:57.81.
In the final event, the women’s 4x400-meter relay team (Victoria Junious, Darrian Johnson, Kacie Mayberry, Baylee Nelson) touched in seventh place at 3:56.05.
The men’s 4x400m relay team (Na’Jee Wickliff, DJ Simon, Tevaun Scallion, Jamison Justice) finished sixth with a time of 3:15.04.
-Freshman Karl Sralla finished 13th in javelin with a season-best throw of 50.25 meters
-Junior Kevone Kennedy took fifth in hammer throw at 52.74 meters
-Junior Gabriel McAdams finished eighth in pole vault at 4.73 meters
-4x100-meter relay team (Derrick Samuels, James Cole, Alford Tribble, Collin Heard) came in seventh at 40.86
-Junior Tevaun Scallion took sixth in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.53
-Freshman Jacob Kevetter finished seventh in the 110m hurdles at 14.73
-Freshman Artesha Richardson came in 10th in the 400-meter dash at 55.93
-Sophomore Baylee Nelson finished 11th in the 800-meter run at 2:19.51
-Junior Zach Kirkland came in eighth in the 800m run at 1:55.35
-Freshman Bailey Ashmore finished 10th in pole vault with a season-best mark of 3.83 meters (12-6.75 feet)
North Texas will split the team apart by sending the distance runners to California at the Bryan Clay and Mt. SAC relays on April 14. The rest of the team with compete at the Texas Invitational on April 15.
