Track & Field Posts Multiple School Records At TCU Invitational
Javier Lopez-Ibarra, Bailey Ashmore Break School Records
FORT WORTH - Javier Lopez-Ibarra and Bailey Ashmore broke school records in javelin and pole vault to highlight track and field's first outdoor meet of the season Saturday at the TCU Invitational at Lowdon Track and Field Complex.
"It was a good opener," head coach Carl Sheffield said. "We are way ahead of where we were last year. We have a couple of weeks before we start our championship preparation. It's alway good for the younger athletes to see this type of competition early in the season. This will improved our daily training for the long seaosn."
The Mean Green finished the meet with two first-place finishes and five podium finishes in their first action in over three weeks.
Lopez-Ibarra, on his first attempt, threw a school-record in javelin at 66.55 meters (218-04 feet), finishing in first place.
In pole vault, Ashmore broke the school record with a vault of 3.96 meters (12-11.75 feet). Ashmore finished third as Olympic gold medalist from 2012 Jennifer Suhr finished first at 4.82 meters.
On Friday, freshman Haley Walker finished fourth in discus with a throw of 47.05 meters (154-04 feet). Sophomore Karl Sralla came in fourth in discus with a personal-best throw of 53.34 meters (175 feet).
In the first event on day two, sophomore Kristyn Archuleta took home first place in javelin with a throw of 48.54 meters (159-03 feet).
The women's 4x100-meter relay team finished fourth as freshman Taylor Blackshire, sophomore Bria Williams, freshman Lyric Choice and freshman Valencia Bullock touched in at 45.66.
Junior Jourden Taylor was third in high jump at 2.00 meters (6-6.75 feet). Junior Rea Iseli was second in the 800-meter run at 2:12.98. Sophomore Tim Jones finished fourth in the 800-meter run at 1:55.97.
In the men's 1500-meter run, senior Mike Lowe finished second (3:55.17), sophomore Florian Lussy was third with a personal-best time of 3:55.58, Jones came in fourth at 3:57.62 and freshman Shane Bracken was fifth (3:57.76).
-Sophomore Howard Grant was seventh in long jump at 6.77 meters (22-2.50 feet)
-Sralla finished sixth in javelin with a throw of 53.47 meters (175-05 feet)
-Freshman Amber Walker came in fourth in high jump at 1.63 meters (5-4.25 feet)
-Senior Christina Moralez finished eighth in 1500-meter run at 4:42.60
-Senior Victoria Junious was fifth in 800-meter run at 2:16.47
-Walker came in seventh in shot put at 13.57 meters (44-6.25 feet)
-Junior Cassidy Adams was 11th in the 3000-meter run at 10:27.71
-Bullock finished ninth in triple jump at 11.58 meters (38 feet)
-Freshman Matthew Morgan came in 11th in the 3000-meter run at 9:14.36
North Texas will remain close to home by heading to the Bobby Lane Invitational hosted by UTA on March 23-24.
