LUBBOCK, Texas (2/6/10) - The North Texas track and field team put together their best performance of the season by winning four individual events and placing eight athletes in the top three at the Texas Tech Open Saturday afternoon.
"It was good to get back out there and win a few events and get back in the swing of things," North Texas head coach Rick Watkins said. "On one hand it's good to have as much rest as we did coming into today but I do think we might have been missing a little bit of intensity in the sprints events."
The Mean Green got a big boost in the long distance events from both junior Patrick Strong and sophomore Sara Dietz. Competing in their first indoor races of the season, both Strong and Dietz finished first in their respective events. Strong won the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:35.38, nearly 10 seconds better than the next opponent. Dietz meanwhile finished six seconds ahead of Dallas Baptist's Tabbitha Ashford to win the 1 Mile Run in a time of 5:11.01.
In the field events freshman high jumper Suzy Prikryl won her first career event with a jump of 5-04.50 and doing so in fewer attempts than Oklahoma Baptist's Abby Lewis. Prikryl had finished second in her previous meet in Lubbock.
Junior Jordan Wehr also won his first event of the season by taking first in the pole vault with a season-best leap of 16-06.75.
Sophomore sensation Keyth Talley continued his stellar 2010 campaign by finishing second in the 55-meter dash (6.29) and third in the 200-meter dash (21.44). Talley has now finished in the top three in all five of his individual races. He was also the last leg of the 4X400 relay team that finished fourth with a time of 3:16.34.
In the women's sprints junior Brittani Simmons placed third in the 200-meter dash (24.54) and junior Alysha Adams had a season-best time (8.09) in the 55-meter hurdles to also finish third.
As a team North Texas won't be back in action now until Saturday, Feb. 20 when they travel to Norman, OK for the Sooner Open II. However Watkins and the rest of the coaching staff are planning on sending a handful of athletes to compete at the Iowa St. ISU Classic.
