North Texas Focuses On Wide Receivers, Offensive Line in 2017 Class

DENTON - The North Texas football team inked 15 prospects on national-signing day Wednesday to complete its 2017 recruiting class. Added to three early signees, the Mean Green added 18 scholarship student-athletes - including seven three-star athletes - to their roster.

The run-up to signing day was a little more hectic than recent years at North Texas, with prospects changing their minds or committing to the Mean Green at the last minute. That's a by-product of North Texas raising its sights and going after higher-rated players. In the last few recruiting cycles, the Mean Green were competing primarily with other Conference USA schools and SMU, and had their signing class substantially locked down 48 hours before signing day. This year, however, in addition to those familiar foes, Mean Green head coach Seth Littrell and staff went head-to-head with the likes of Houston, Baylor and Texas Tech regionally as well as national opponents like West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Memphis, Navy, Ohio, Iowa State and Air Force. More importantly, they came away with some key victories in that arena.

Among those wins are a trio of wide receivers to help fuel Littrell's offense: Jalen Guyton, Jaelon Darden and Greg White, all of whom were rated three stars by recruiting services and all of whom received offers in state and beyond. North Texas pressed hard for a number of touted receivers, and while the lineup changed in the final 72 hours before signing day, Littrell was happy with the players who chose to come to Denton.

"Wide receiver was one of our biggest areas that we needed to get better at and get deeper at," Littrell said. "We feel like the group of guys that we are bringing in allows us to do more things offensively and be much more diverse in how we attack people."

The class is also heavy on offensive linemen, bolstering the Mean Green front with five signees, including Manase Mose, a 6-1, 306 earth-mover from Euless Trinity whose highlight video was dubbed "International House of Pancakes" for all the defenders he flattened.

"We knew we needed to add depth on our offensive line, but with these guys, we really think they will come in and compete for playing time right away," Littrell said. "We wanted to be longer and more athletic up front and these guys bring that."
