2006-07 Athletic Success
A member of the Sun Belt Conference, North Texas has captured 12 conference championships in the last
six years. During the 2006-07 school year, the Mean Green men's basketball team won its first Sun Belt Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1988.
Individually, 61 Mean Green student-athletes were named Sun Belt All-Conference during the 2006-07 school year. The track and field team sent a student-athlete to the NCAA Championships for the third consecutive season. Senior Heath Smith qualified for the outdoor championships after placing second in the javelin at the NCAA Midwest Regionals.
The track and field team combined for eight individual conference championships at the 2007 indoor and outdoor meets. The track team also sent 14 athletes to the NCAA Midwest Regionals
The women's volleyball team tallied 23 wins and claimed the Sun Belt Western Division crown for the first time since joining the Sun Belt. The Mean Green advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament before falling to the eventual champions. Dustin Thompson picked up all-conference honors at the 2007 Sun Belt Conference Golf Championship after finishing third in the tournament.
First-year head coach Joe Dykstra led the North Texas swimming and diving team to its most successful season in the program's nine-year history. The team posted its highest finish at the Sun Belt Conference Championship with fourth place. Six swimmers earned All-Sun Belt honors at the Sun Belt Conference Championship.
The women's soccer team advanced to its seventh consecutive conference championship but fell just shy of winning its third consecutive title, falling to Denver in the finals. The Mean Green finished with 15 wins, recording its 12th winning season, every year of the program's existence. Heather Hutyra earned first-team all-conference honors for the third consecutive year.
