DENTON, Texas – North Texas head coach Tony Benford added to
his already impressive recruiting class with signing of Oldsmar Christian (Fla.)
big-man Tony Nunn to a National Letter of Intent.
Nunn’s signing adds to a recruiting class heralded by
HoopScoopOnline as the nation’s 28th best, including the top class among
schools in the Sun Belt and NT's future Conference USA opponents.
“Tony is a wide-bodied low block player that can step out
and consistently knock down a 15-footer,” Benford said. “He might be the best
rebounder in the group, and that’s really saying something with the amount of
talented paint players in this class. We really look forward to welcoming Tony
into our program.”
Sized up at 6-foot-9 and 260-pounds, Nunn is drawing praise
for his athleticism as well as his size. 247Sports.com listed Nunn as one of
the nation’s top 200 players, and the No. 45 ranked power forward in the
country.
ESPN had him rated as the No. 19 recruit in the state of
North Carolina, and it’s no wonder with a 7-2 wingspan and tons of athletic
potential. Nunn chose NT over offers East Carolina, Charlotte, Cincinnati,
Jacksonville, Virginia Tech, Wichita State and Winthrop.
North Texas, a program that has averaged 21 wins per season
over the last six years, hosts its home opener on Friday night. Tip off from
the Super Pit is slated for 7 p.m. and can be heard on the Mean Green Radio
Network.
