Game Notes
DENTON, Texas – North Texas has won a school-record nine
straight home openers, and will look to make it 10 when the Cameron Aggies come
to town on Friday. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. and can be seen via
MeanGreenSports.com webcast or heard on the Mean Green Radio Network.
Tony Benford led NT to a 74-59 win over Lamar on Tuesday,
which was the first victory of his head coaching career. With a win over
Cameron, Benford could start his career with a 2-2 mark. Only five of NT’s
previous 16 head coaches started their careers better than 2-2, and none since
Bill Blakeley in 1975-76.
This will be the seventh all-time matchup between NT and
Cameron, but the fifth time since 2006-07 that NT has played its home opener
against the Aggies. The Mean Green has won the four most recent outings by an
average of 90-57 (33 points).
Alzee Williams and Jacob Holmen were freshmen the last time
Cameron came into the Super Pit on Nov. 13, 2009. NT pulled away for an 80-62
victory. Williams was 1-of-2 from the floor for two points, while Holmen hit a
pair of jumpers for four points. The night was memorable for the performance of
George Odufuwa, who racked up 24 rebounds - the fourth most in school history.
Benford just laid the foundation on the nation’s No. 28
ranked recruiting class according to HoopScoopOnline.com, which includes
Seguin’s Greg Wesley, Kingwood’s Josh Friar and Oldsmar Christian big-man Tony
Nunn. NT’s class is ranked higher than that of any Sun Belt school or future
CUSA foe.
